I was delighted to welcome former world champion and Olympian, Senator Eamonn Coughlan to the county athletic finals of the community Games in Craanford on Saturday June 23rd June.
“I had been particularly anxious to arrange for Eamonn to come to this event” said Senator D’Arcy, “given his Olympian achievenemts, his own involvement with the community games, and importantly his efforts to overcome childhood obesity and promote activity. I believed that his visit to Crannford would inspire children and adults alike”.
Senator D’Arcy continued “The community games are a fantastic example of a fun environment in which kids can get exercise. Senator Coughlan is bringing proposals to Government to make physical fitness and exercise a core part of the lives of children and a component of the school curriculum. A 2007 Irish Heart Foundation report suggested that up to 27% of children are overweight or obese. I strongly believe that we all have a roll to play in providing opportunities for young people to be active and healthy”.
Following his visit to Craanford Senator Coughlan said “I was delighted to accept Michael D’Arcy’s invitation to visit Wexford today. I t was wonderful to see so many young people enjoying the competition and staying healthy at the same time. I look forward to returning to Wexford many times in the future”.
